In mid-March 2020, as the Met made the difficult decision to cancel performances due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic, mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato was in the opera house rehearsing for an eagerly anticipated revival of Massenet’s Werther. Within days, she and co-star Piotr Beczała took to an impromptu livestream to perform excerpts from the opera. It would be many opera lovers’ first taste of the kind of virtual programing that became more and more common in the ensuing months. The Met launched its own live online performance series, Met Stars Live in Concert, later in the year, presenting some of opera’s most extraordinary artists in concerts from around the globe. DiDonato joined the series in September 2020, accompanied by pianist Carrie-Ann Matheson and longtime collaborators, Baroque ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro, from a truly remarkable venue: a former German industrial pavilion now used for theatrical events.

From pioneering radio broadcasts to high-definition transmissions in cinemas in more than 70 countries, the Met has always strived to use state-of-the-art technology to share extraordinary performances with as large an audience as possible. Therefore, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the opera house into darkness for more than a year, the company once again found innovative ways to present the world’s greatest artists to music lovers around the globe. Jonas Kaufmann, one of opera’s most in-demand tenors, kicked off the series at Bavaria’s magnificent Polling Abbey with a program of heroic arias, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch. Including classic selections from the Italian and French repertoires—as well as a few lesser-known gems—the concert provided a rousing start to this groundbreaking new initiative.

The investigation is conducted remotely. On the one hand, it is convenient to work remotely, but on the other hand it is very difficult to find a common language between the investigator and the suspects. Comic situations are just bursting at the edges, and then there's the wife, the innate modesty and the internal rivalry within the police force, which all get in the way of a good performance. Suspicious circumstances abound, the case stalls and even Santa Claus is on the list of suspects.
